Anyone fancy applying to become an air traffic controller?

I often recommend this career path to people and advise looking out for when NATS are recruiting.

They have just opened their recruitment window for ATC trainees:

Trainee Air Traffic Controllers - NATS

Not many people can do this type of job so the rewards are high if you succeed at selection and training. Anyone 18+ can apply with GCSEs (no A-levels, degree, or experience required) provided they have the right to work in the UK and meet the medical requirements.

Even if this kind of career never appealed to you before, it's worth having a look at the page linked above and trying out the online tests.

NATS provides safe and efficient air traffic services and innovative solutions to UK and international airports, airlines and governments.

This is fascinating! I'd never considered that as an option before.

It says you can be posted anywhere in the UK. Is there no way you can request the local airport/centre?

And do you know what kind of shifts you are required to do? Am wondering how it fits in with family life.

My eyesight wouldn't cut it I don't think, and I'm probably a bit too old now, but years ago I did some volunteer work and one of the people I met was an air traffic controller and so incredibly calm and with it. Great career option and as you say, really not that common.
