Flexible working request - one of the days rejected

Lemonaade · 28/03/2023 19:16

I’ve asked to reduce my hours, and have two days off. They said that they can reduce my hours but asked me to take a different day off to one of the two days I asked for.

I can take those two days off and I do have flexibility, it’s more I want that particular day off for social reasons.

The reason they won’t let me have that day is because they have too many people off on that day already so for business reasons they need me in.

do I have a leg to stand on to appeal it?

I very much doubt it. They've refused on business grounds and offered you an alternative that works for the business.

Verylongtime · 28/03/2023 19:20

No, I don’t think you do, I’m afraid.

Cherryblossoms85 · 28/03/2023 19:21

Just wish that was even possible for me.

Everyone wants Fridays off, you'll just have to wait your turn because it looks like you've been beaten to it.

DrMarciaFieldstone · 28/03/2023 19:22

No, especially if your appeal is that you want the particular day for social reasons.

Flexi working has to work for the individual and the business

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 28/03/2023 19:23

No - they’ve given you a business reason for the rejection and proposed an alternative day off.
I’m not sure on what grounds you’d appeal tbh

Foreversearch · 28/03/2023 23:04

@Lemonaade they have agreed to your request to reduce by 2 days. This includes agreeing to one of the days you requested (50%). They have given sound business reasons for not agreeing to the second day and offered an alternative.

Absolutely no way you can challenge this as they have been entirely reasonable.

I work in a small team, we have 2 part timers who don’t work on Wednesdays. This is already tricky enough over holiday periods, and if anyone else requested a ‘non-working Wednesday’ it would definitely be declined

SquigglePigs · 29/03/2023 08:12

I think the only thing you could do is ask for a different day agin. For example you asked for Monday and Friday and they've offered Monday and Thursday I think you could say "well Thursday isn't great, could we look at Monday and Wednesday?". But you can't object to the decline of the Friday for business reasons.

MoonBase · 29/03/2023 08:14

There needs to be a reasonable business need to decline the request, there is one
And they have been flexible

Appeal if you like but they are not being unreasonable at all
