Is it normal to be called for a return to work meeting when coming back from maternity leave?

I thought this was reserved for if you’re off sick.

Did you do you kit days? We used to do rtw for any absence except holiday in my last place

GallopingGreen · 23/03/2023 20:00

Yes quite normal! Mine was more a chat - how I'm doing, plus updates on any changes since I was on leave etc and asking about hours or flexibility etc

Plusnett · 23/03/2023 20:00

I think it’s normal to have a meeting when you return to work after maternity leave. However I don’t know whether it’s specifically called a “return to work meeting” as that same wording can be used in attendance management proceedings.

I would just assume it’s a meeting to help you settle back in, update you on developments and to check what support they can offer you

Nimbostratus100 · 23/03/2023 20:01

normal

SunsetStrip · 23/03/2023 20:13

Yes, normal. Even 21 years ago when I returned to work.

CutiePatooties · 23/03/2023 20:13

@Greensleevevssnotnose I only attended one KIT day and I’ve been off for a year.

@GallopingGreen @Nimbostratus100 thank you, that’s made me feel better!

@Plusnett yeah, I think the formality of it all has scared me a bit. I thought my manager might pull me in for a chat and give updates etc. I didn’t expect to have an invite to a zoom meeting sent to me from HR, inviting both my manager and me to a ‘return to work meeting.’ Just panicked me a bit.

thank you all for replying so quickly 💐 I love how helpful everyone is on MN.

I'm sure it's just part of the process and that is why HR set it up. I actually felt better starting back on my first day having had that return to work meeting- wasn't so hard when I'd seen my manager so recently iykwim. Best of luck!!

@CutiePatooties its good practice. Also from your perspective you can make sure the practical stuff like security passes, logins still work etc. if not you can get it sorted before you start. It’s also a good way to reconnect with colleagues and hear about any changes etc.

Definitely in your interest! Returning to the workplace after a long period of absence can be disorienting and this gives the company the opportunity to talk you through any changes that have occurred during your absence and to check on your wellbeing. I'd be concerned if they didn't hold such a meeting.
