Where are all the jobs?

Hello,

Been made redundant. I've been obsessively looking for jobs on Indeed and LinkedIn and there's nothing about.

I'm a project coordinator with marketing skills. I've been looking at administrative roles too and nada.... (one role had 300 applicants!)

I've looked on LinkedIn for remote roles and they seem to come to nothing :/ but I'd rather work in an office instead.

Anyone else finding the same? What do you do when there's nothing to apply for? 😂 give me hope!

We don't have CS here (we'll 0 jobs in the whole county) and LA roles have been removed.

How long have you been a Project Coordinator? Should you be looking for a Project Manager role?

Ohhlavache · 21/03/2023 08:24

Hey @yoshiblue - yeah I'm looking for anything project manager / coordinator and even administrative roles which include project management - but there are zero roles here. Not even one! 😳

There aren't even any "administrator" roles here.

The Local Authority usually have a good selection of roles because they struggle to recruit. But they've paused all hiring for the time being.

So nothing, zilch, nada

When I was in LA we would have to have a jobs pause if we were undergoing cuts etc as posts would have to be offered to people undergoing redundancy. I imagine there are lots of restructuring at the moment.

have you tried any agencies?

redspottedmug · 21/03/2023 08:29

You might have more luck with LAs after 1st April in the new financial year, when hiring freezes may be lifted.

Ohhlavache · 21/03/2023 08:37

Thanks both! That's really useful information.

I'm registered with all the recruiters locally (in the entire county!) and there's nothing. They did ask if I was keen on a junior admin position last week - I said yes. The company said I was too experienced. Fair enough I guess.

I'll just hang in there. I hate having this gap on my CV and I feel under pressure to close it.

I live in a small city. You'd think there would be something - but waiting for the financial year makes so much sense now.

Fingers crossed for April then! X

Although, if there's redundancies then there'll be even more applicants per role on Indeed!!

Oh crap.

MajorCarolDanvers · 21/03/2023 08:42

Lots of jobs in charity sector including wfh.

Try charityjob.co.uk

I've just looked at it and there are 1700 project manager jobs and 900 project coordinator jobs on it just now.

Talkingtomyhouseplants · 21/03/2023 08:54

My fiancé has recently been looking for jobs in a similar sector to you and found there to be an abundance. I think he applied for about 30 and offered 10 interviews. Although he ended up getting offered the first one he interviewed for so didn’t go to the rest.

have you looked at your local uni jobs? About 12 of the jobs he applied for were in university administration

yoshiblue · 21/03/2023 08:59

What region are you in? I've just searched on Linked In, and there are a ton of roles?

Note, through my recent job hunting experience you definitely need to search both remote and hybrid roles for UK. Hybrid can mean anything from 2-3 times per week to once per month/quarter that is more doable from a different part of the country.

Ohhlavache · 21/03/2023 09:06

@Talkingtomyhouseplants we only have one small campus here. They have good jobs when advertised (not very often!) - but when I apply they always tell me it was filled internally.

@yoshiblue Thanks, I'll have another look. I do tend to find that on LinkedIn they either don't reply at all, end up being self employed only or they say I'm too far away from London (6 hours) x

I'll check out charity jobs. 😊 I'll spend the day going back to LinkedIn and Charity Jobs.

Thanks everyone!

Sounds like you are a good way from London to be practical to travel regularly.

I would say not to solely rely on online applications. Linked In is the easiest route to apply for roles so they tend to get bombarded, it can be hard to stand out.

Some other things to suggest:

  • Write a list of target companies in your area, think about who you know there, how you can connect with hiring managers?
  • Leverage your network, who do you know who can advise re: roles in their companies, get your CV on the desk of a hiring manager?
  • Broaden the recruiters that you are with? Difficult to suggest options not knowing your location.

Also, bear in mind a lot of jobs are filled through word of mouth and recommendations. I have just got a new role and that was via my network. New dept being created and I was in conversation about potential roles before it was even advertised.

I can't recall when our recruitment freeze started it was so long ago, and there is no chance it will be lifted in April. The only recruitment we have is social care and social workers.

ForestRun · 21/03/2023 11:43

I'm in a similar role to you, but in management. I cannot find anything really. I keep being offered roles which I'm over qualified for and very low pay. I'm in the NW too and there's normally a good selection of jobs.

Hope you find something soon!

Ohhlavache · 21/03/2023 11:55

@ForestRun I'm so glad I'm not alone. I just had a little cry about the whole debacle after a recruiter hunted me down on LinkedIn and told me I was perfect for the role. 10 mins later she messages with "no sorry our client is looking for someone to work 8 - 6pm, onsite" which is 250 miles away.

What a tit...

Have you had a look on nhsjobs? They usually have quite a few project or admin roles

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 21/03/2023 12:14

The Environment currently has several assistant/pm/senior PM roles advertised across England (we only operate in England).

Have you tried temp work? It’ll cover your cv gap and very often become permanent.

Ohhlavache · 22/03/2023 07:24

Thanks everyone. I spent yesterday applying for roles (mostly remote or hybrid)

A local job popped up on Indeed. 75 of us applied and then it was taken down again. I think employer felt overwhelmed by it. 😂
