Part time should I have set days/hours

Just wanted to know what is the norm really. I've returned to work part time after maternity leave but I don't have set days/times I work, in my contract just that I work 3 days per week. A colleague was saying I should ask for it to be set in my contract or have something more official as they could chop and change my hours each week and I won't know where I'm at with childcare. Another part time person is starting soon and my colleague was saying if they start with requests and days they can and can't do then I may just be slotted in to work around them. Where I work it is shift work so not Mon-Fri 9-5. Would it be better to ask for something set, any advice would be great

@aaaaaaaaaaaah your colleague is right. I am very much a flexibility is 2 ways not 1, but not having a working pattern documented can come back and bite you. Plus what happens on a BH, is it a days leave or a NWD?

I would talk to your manager and say you would like to have set days and hours specified but will be flexible to meet business needs. Follow up with an email so it’s on record.

Do full time staff have set days and hours?

Depends... do full time employees have set shifts each week? If so then yes it's best you have set days.
If not then no you shouldn't have set days.
