References when you've been out of work mumming

Argh.

I started a new job a while ago and it's dependent on satisfactory references.

I have worked completely intermittently since having my first of 3 kiddos.

Feel in a way it would have been better to have just not worked for those 10 years!

I am really struggling to get references.

Any tips x

Any company I've worked for have checked references long before I even started!

This doesn’t are any sense. How can you have started the job if it’s dependant on references. And if you’re struggling to get references when you’ve worked intermittently why would not working be better?

I just got HR ones to say I was employed between such and such dates.

Have you started the job or not?
If you have started the job, references should have been taken up beforehand .
