Should I apply for another role a few months into current one?

A new project is starting with my employer so they’re recruiting for a management position with a much better salary than my existing role. I’ve worked there for several years but only moved over to my new role a few months ago. They are encouraging internal applicants but I’m not sure if it reflects badly that I’m ‘job hopping’? I love my job and the organisation but I’ve been thinking of retraining in a different field to improve my salary prospects so this could be a two birds, one stone scenario. What do you think my chances are?

Job hopping is only bad if its sideways or below hops. This is neither.

Job hopping is expected within my organisation, my line manager sends us all internal vacancies and encourages us to apply. Jobs are blind sifted too so nobody would know it was you that applied until the interview stage.

So I would go for it, Im sure your company would rather keep you and backfill your role instead.
