I have been mistakenly paid by my old employer. I informed them but they paid me again the following month. Am I obliged to pay it back?

Yes of course.

That's disappointing, was hoping I'd be a few grand better off!

Inform them in writing. DO NOT SPEND IT. If they don't claim it back soon put it is an savings account that you can access. If you are in England or Wales they can reclaim it for up to 6 years. I think it's 5 in Scotland but can't swear to that!

When did you leave OP? Have you received your P45?

If not check your personal tax account to see if they've reported the earnings to HMRC - you could end up with an incorrect tax code in your new job (if you have one) if they're still reporting to HMRC for you.

@JenniferWooley I left earlier this year.
No P45 and have been put on emergency tax code which is frustrating as I first notified them a number of weeks ago that they had made a mistake in January payroll. It will sort itself out but annoying all the same.

@Whatabootit the emergency tax code is due to not having your P45 & while it will be sorted we are nearing the end of the tax year so it may not be sorted before then meaning the hassle of dealing with HMRC to get the refund - I'd suggest contacting your old employer & requesting your P45 as it sounds like they haven't processed you as a leaver yet.
