Hello all, would love any advice. I’m a qualified barrister (criminal specialist) but haven’t practised for over 13 years. Practising cert frozen, so no issues there. After dc1, as a single parent, I couldn’t bear the thought of returning to the instability and chaos of the criminal Bar, and couldn’t find any suitable in-house roles, so I retrained as a primary teacher, which I did happily for 8 years in a lovely independent school. We have since moved out of the smoke (just outside a smaller city with good links to London). I am now realising the hideous reality of working in underfunded state schools under despotic heads and I’m desperate to go back to law and have the academic stimulation and challenge, and salary that is so sorely lacking from my current work. However, I don’t want to go back to criminal work, and would really love to do private client as I feel like it would provide academic challenge as well as suit my family life and use my client facing skills effectively. I’m toying with doing the SQE as I’ve been out for so long - but would it be necessary? Any tips on how I might get into private practice would be gratefully received! Thanks so much in advance, sorry this is a bit long! For clarity, I don’t want to go back the Bar - I want to join a firm.
