What to do next?

I’m a predominately print based graphic designer (with some crossover to static digital mediums) and I can’t decide what’s best to do next. I have 10 years experience.

I’ve started an open university course but I’m now wondering if something skills based - UX design maybe? But I hear that’s a saturated market. I work part time so I could definitely study then volunteer to hone new skills. But I just want to make sure I’m going in the right direction. Any thoughts?

You sound more suited to UI design which is more specialised in front end design of digital products have you looked in to that? What do you like most about your current job?

Thank you for your reply! Definitely keen to be involved in UI too but I was really interested in the research side of UX.

What course are you doing at the moment at open university? There are lots of people in UX but there is also a lot of opportunity for UX designers so I don't think I'd write it off. You'd learn a lot of transferable skills to I think.

Design & Innovation - I was thinking the interface and interaction route

Hi pickledsausage - I've just come across this thread as I explore some options for getting back into work. I've been a FTM for a long time (probably too long), and I'm interested to know what path you ended up taking. If you wouldn't mind sharing, I'd love to know whether UX/UI worked out for you, and how you approached the career change. For context, I was a magazine editor/designer/journalist before I had children.
Many thanks!
