How to whistleblow a bully

Last year I started a bank admin role, just myself and another long term colleague in the office. Things started off really well, then the person got a promotion to a made up job as “ supervisor.”

Things then started to go downhill, they stated they were going to start cracking the whip…… Long story short I was at the brunt of passive aggressive bullying for a good few months. Was in the process of looking for something else. However, I caught Covid nearly six months ago, was really poorly, I have been diagnosed with long Covid. I have medical appointments all the time, all over the place.

A couple of months ago I sent the “ supervisor “ a message to say I had a substantial sick certificate and sorry but I won’t be in until I’m better. I didn’t get a reply, I was completely ignored.
Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago, I received my work notebook in post with all the pages of my step by step instructions of how to do all my work ripped out. It took me ages to write it all up. No note with it, nothing .
If I ever get well enough to return, that notebook would be the only I can do my job, as I would pretty much have to relearn everything. I was absolutely fuming 😡. In fact in speechless!
I have never experienced such blatant, nasty, passive aggressive behaviour as this in my very long working life!

I want to make a formal complaint, not just about the most recent action but everything that precedes it before I was ill. But, if it’s just to my line manager, it will be swept under the carpet. AIBU to take this to HR director level ?
Should I just ignore it? I’m obviously not going back to that office.

Im so fed up of long term staff bullying and thinking they are untouchable.

Are you in a union?

Milly699 · 11/02/2023 20:08

@GlassBunion yes Unison, I will seek their advice.

Good. Your union rep should be your first port of call. She/he will guide you through your grievance process.
Be sure to have all copes of relevant policies as well as your contract.

GlassBunion · 11/02/2023 20:10

Good luck.

greysparkly · 11/02/2023 20:12

Good luck op.

I am a union rep. There doesn't seem a lot you can factually back up apart from the sick leave; they could say they used your notes and they were very useful, so they have them on site. Unless you have proof of a lot more?

My advice if not would be to return to work and every time they say something you think is bullying / mean you write it in an email to them saying your understanding is they said xx to you and could they respond within 48 hours of this email. That way not only do you have a written report of events, you have emailed them and given them a chance to respond and if they don't, that is another pattern emerging.

@greysparkly @GlassBunion Thankyou! 🤗🤗

@WeAreAllLionesses I’m not well enough to return to work for possibly quite some time, if ever. Even if I was well, I certainly don’t want to go back to that office, just to get more evidence.
If I don’t have enough, then so be it. There’s no wonder there’s so many workplace bullies, if it’s so easy to get away with it.

@WeAreAllLionesses just to add, I do have a lot more than just this incident. I have mentioned more throughout the thread.

@MarshaMelrose I don’t work in a bank! I have a bank/ zero contact! No security threats in my notes!

I'm sooo sorry. When you said a bank admin role, I thought you meant an admin role in a bank! 😄 I'm a dope. 😔

@MarshaMelrose Haha! No worries! I’m just so used to using the term “ bank” for work, I forget it’s also a place to put your money!
