Starting job as school admin/reception soon, any info?

State secondary…I would love some advice from anyone who has done/is doing the job. I’ve read around and I know it’s going to be intense. I have a lot of admin experience in both small business and large public sector, but have never worked in a school…I’m really wondering what the bulk of phone calls tend to be, how many people tend to be waiting at reception at any time, etc. Obviously I will have an induction and ask lots of questions, but I would still welcome info. Ty :) !

Every day is different and it can be crazy busy. Just deal with people one at a time - unless an emergency comes up, then they have to wait. Most parents are lovely, some aren't!
I love my job. The time goes very quickly but it can be bonkers. Good luck!

I’ve just left my school admin/pastoral role, I’ve done 3 different roles in 2 different schools and I am an ex teacher. It will hugely depend on the school and how well staffed they are in the admin department.

Sometimes it will be insanely busy, sometimes it will be totally dead and you will be bored stupid.
Some of the parents will shock you to the core.
Make sure there is a good system of cover for your lunch/break. It’s important just to have a short break to compose yourself and have a drink and wee.
It can be hard at the beginning but gets much much easier. Teachers always assume you know who they are even if you’ve never seen them before I find.
