Hi
I'm looking to change jobs in the near future . I want something different so I have been considering admin / sales ordering. Most job ads require experience. I have none . I have basic computer skills and a good standard of written English . I have experience in retail . How difficult is the job ? And would they consider someone with no experience?

Variable. Good organisation skills, ability to prioritise, meet deadlines, accuracy, strong communication skills-verbal and written. Some roles will be more time pressured or monotonous, others could involve money, record keeping and spreadsheets.

I think without any experience, you’ll struggle to find a role, to be honest. Whenever we have an administrative role come up, it always gets more applicants than other roles. I’d also be looking for an administrator to have above basic IT skills as they are very often called upon to help other staff with only basic skills. Is there any scope to do some admin work in your current role? If they already know you they might be more willing to give you a shot.

Could you maybe volunteer for the PTA or something similar to get some experience? Also I agree with IT skills - an online Office course might give you an edge. Personally I don’t think it’s hard as a day job (compared to hospitality etc where you’re constantly public-facing and on your feet) - but it does depend on your boss, team, working environment like anything else.

Usually for admin roles they are looking for experience, would you be able to volunteer to do some admin work for a local charity to gain experience?
