Promotion ?

In November I was asked if I'd like to try a different role at work. At that point I was advised my manager would speak to the MD about pay as it would be a promotion. In December my manager asked if I was happy with the role and in my end of year review advised if I wanted to go back to my old role in 6 months I could.

I took it that this was a 6 month probation, but now I'm not so sure and I don't know how to bring it up?

This isn't really clear. Probation is mostly meaningless. What is it you are actually concerned about? The pay?

I don’t understand what your question is, either in here or the one you want to ask at work? Can you elaborate on what it is you are unclear on.

I think your manager is stating that if you didn’t feel that the role was right for you after 6 months then you can revert back to your previous position.
It probably does mean that they could ‘demote’ you after the 6 months if they feel the role isn’t right.
