Work in UK and live in Ireland

This is a bit difficult I think but I work for an arms length body in the UK but want to live in Ireland (elderly parents are there and need end of life care). HR are looking into it but, frankly, have no idea what to do as they have said it has not arisen before. They seem to think it will be a no but seem to think that based on the fact that Ireland is in the EU (which it is) but does anyone know if it can be done because of the CTA arrangements between Ireland and the UK? Thanks

Do you mean live in Ireland but work remotely for a UK employer?

I don't think the issue is solely whether you have the right to live there, but whether the arrangement means you acquire employment rights under Irish law, the tax position for your employer, etc. Cross border employment is really complex (mainly for the employer), EU or not.

My friend spent months at a time working "from home" in Ireland while one of her parents was dying - and in the year following too, while working for a US based firm that she had worked for (while living in the us) for years.

If an American firm can manage it, surely,a UK firm can. Her biggest problem was the time difference (working on US time in Ireland). She did go home every few months mind you, maybe the fact that she was still based there helped.

It will be tax implications etc for the employer, rather than you having the right to live/work there. Does your company already have any sort of registered office in Ireland, because that would make it a lot easier.

It happens between northern Ireland and the Republic all the time around the border. So I imagine it is possible

Lots of people live in the South and work over the border in NI so it must be doable.

There is very specific agreement between Ireland and Northern Ireland, it isn't transferable to rest of UK.

Unfortunately it will be up to your employer.
