To be let down by 2nd time?

Hi all. I applied for a job back in august and had two interviews which went exceptionally well. But they decided not to go with me as they needed someone to start asap and I had a months notice and they said that simply was the reason.

Then they came back to me around Xmas time asking if I'm still available for the role and I of course said yes. They confirmed the details and said they will call me Friday to let me know the outcome.
Friday past and I didn't hear anything. I've emailed them again asking if there's been any progression but to think it's not professional to come back to me asking if I'm still available for that job then not hearing from them? Or if they don't offer me it?

I would be very cautious with this; not being willing to wait just 1 month (a very standard notice period!) for your preferred candidate is very unusual behaviour. A bit like a potentially irrational partner, I would be seeing this as a red flag.

Hmmmm - I can see red flags here for sure - but then, they might just be busy..
Is it a ‘dream’ job or just a role that you can escape from your current?
