I'm a Network Rail Signaller and I've seen on Mumsnet there is a fair bit of interest in working within the rail industry, please feel free to ask me anything. The best way of describing my role without the technicalities is air traffic control but for trains and office based. Entry salary is around 29K up to top level at around 50K (not including overtime, weekends and nights.)
