Handing in notice/awaiting contract

I was offered a new job this week. Very happy. Was told contract should be sent Friday. should be
I'm not happy where I am now but would like to give as much notice as possible (min is 1 week). So I can have a break before starting new job.
Been told I should await the contract before I put my notice in. At what point would I be OK to chase the contract? Or is it too risky to put notice in without it?
Thanks in advance.

You don't really have any remedy if they withdraw the job offer after contract anyway, so it's a risk resigning at any point.

Have you had an offer letter in writing? If so, I would resign based on that, the employer doesn’t need to give you a statement of particulars until your first day. In the meantime the contract was formed when they offered and you accepted the job offer and having it on another piece of paper does not give you any more protection than not having it.

Thanks both. It's me I'm impatient.
No offer in writing, just verbal. He'd said the contract would be drawn up and I should receive by Friday. Obviously said should be to cover as I know they had a lot of applications and have just advertised again. So i appreciate they will be busy but wondering if still worth chasing next week? Don't want to look pushy.
