Conflict at work

How do you handle a situation where:

  • your manager is close to another person on your team
-This colleague starts to be demanding and unreasonable at work, because the manager backs them up. Eg randomly reallocating their work to others with no agreement from manager -This leads to unfair work allocations and unbalanced caseloads, but your manager doesn’t act as they CBA with the conflict and want to protect their friends.

I’m stuck between wanting to raise this formally (with preferred outcome to be a team move) vs just keeping my head down until I get a new job. But every day this colleague has their antics, it’s harder to keep quiet. I feel like I can’t speak to this manager without the problematic colleague as they come as a “pair”

Can you raise it informally first? Ask the manager’s manager for a chat. Keep it low key, share concerns factually and keep it very focused on the impact it’s having on getting the work done. Ask their advice on how to handle it - use it as a growth opportunity.
