Can I ask how many staff you like manage as a band 7 or does it just vary depending on what the role is?

Not a band 7 but I work with quite a few in my team and they are specialist nurses but don't line manage anyone.

Remainiac · 09/10/2022 20:22

8a, manage one 6 and she doesn’t have line management or budgetary responsibilities- we are a specialist non-clinical function.

Very interested in your opinions of a B3 being given the role of Supervisor / team lead?
Personally I think managers are completely exploiting this person , I have worked as a B3, the general JD clearly states no budgetary or staffing responsibilities.
This person is completely out of their depth, has no idea how to manage staff without coming across as rude and stomping off to wfh if she doesn’t get her own way!

How is it even possible to give a B2 a B3 job with B6 responsibilities?!

I couldn't imaging in what circumstance a band 3 would have supervisory budgetary or managerial responsibilities?

Gobowen · 09/10/2022 21:18

I dont line manage anyone.

Furcoatandnoknickerz · 09/10/2022 22:51

@fudgefiesta can’t go to too much detail for fear of outing. The person was a B2 for many years, top of the band and wanted promotion. Only possible if they join a different team, which wasn’t possible. So, long story short a B3 roll which made them supervisor/ team lead was made up.
Honestly, it’s bizarre, I know there would be no way I would have agreed to do a B6 role on B3 money! I suppose if you’re that desperate to be important!

AHP clinical lead - line management for 4 people but clinical lead responsibility for the whole team (about 25). But people managing isn't really my role, it's all about the clinical specialism. I help everyone else clinically, not pastorally!

Gintime74 · 09/10/2022 23:03

As a b7 Ward sister/ manager I line managed 48 people from b2 to b6. It was too much really as you just can’t give them all the time. I’ve since found that it varies so much depending on the post and service.

squeakyheart · 09/10/2022 23:14

Line manage 30+ in part time hours with support from band 6's. Other equitable posts in our trust mange much less with other band 7 support.

Wherewassteve · 12/10/2022 19:51

@Furcoatandnoknickerz Why on earth is a band 3 managing anyone. In our trust line management/any supervision starts at 5.

She's probably stomping about because she is out of her depth and being exploited!! That's crap.

Wherewassteve · 12/10/2022 19:54

@RubyRedBoots Anyway to the question sorry, I would do as pp said and email/call the vacancy contact with this question. They usually appreciate a chat before for band 7 anyway. The band 7's I work with manager everything from 30+ to one! Sometimes you are a 7 due to clinical expertise and don't have much of the management side. Depends on the dept/specialty as well I guess. All the best. :)

I’m an 8a. I line manage one band 5 and help to supervise our clinical cluster of 5 along with 2 other 8a’s. Our roles are more strategic as AHPs.

vdbfamily · 05/11/2022 10:15

As a Band 7 in my previous trust I had to set up and recruit to a completely new team and line manage about 16 staff.
I am now an 8a in a different trust and the Band 7 Team leads all have very different sized teams from just managing a couple of staff to managing up to 15.

TeenLifeMum · 01/09/2023 12:46

I’m not sure how you effectively line manage 48 people. I have 5 and they are a new team so understandably have high demand on my time. While I expect that to settle, there will always be a drama or challenge.

At b7 in an nhs corporate role I manage 5 and a number of complex projects.

ChocHotolate · 01/09/2023 13:04

None, I am purely clinical and love it

EileenBrysonsTeabags · 01/09/2023 13:17

Line manage none. Provide clinical leadership to 30.
