Think I said something cringey to my manager and HR

I returned from sick leave due to anxiety, and my manager and HR have both been really supportive with getting me in contact with occupational health and being flexible and accommodating throughout my return to work.

I've been told by family friends and even my GP how supportive work have been for me, and how it's not really the norm for a company and manager to be so supportive.

In a meeting with my line manager and HR which was kind of rapping things up and talking about support going forward I just said a quick thank you to both of them for the support they have given me during this time, and that it's been really helpful with getting me settled back into work.

There was a bit of an awkward silence and I think I maybe shouldn't have said that and that it was a bit cringey?

You are overthinking, probably part of the anxiety you have been suffering! I’m sure they will have really appreciated your thanks. Why would they cringe? Would you if someone thanked you for support?

jesusjoan · 02/09/2022 12:07

Definitely over-thinking. They were probably just caught off-guard/not expecting it and I bet you anything they secretly really appreciated your words.

Not cringey at all! Please don't feel bad. As pp has said, they were maybe caught unawares. Maybe no one says thank you to them very often? In my experience, people are quicker to complain about lousy manager and HR than to give any thanks to them even when you do backflips and somersaults to help them 《not that I'm bitter.》.....

You’re overthinking it.

I work in HR and it’s common to be thanked in a scenario like this.

Spudina · 02/09/2022 12:26

Sounds ok to me OP. It’s your anxiety talking.

Auntieobem · 02/09/2022 12:27

Sounds perfectly normal to me, I'm sure they appreciated it.

InconvenientPeg · 02/09/2022 12:39

I'd have been really pleased if a direct report in your situation said that, it would mean that I'd managed to do my job right in a difficult situation .

perimenofertility · 02/09/2022 12:58

It's not cringey at all and I'm sure they appreciated you saying it. The pause was probably just that they weren't expecting it.

skgnome · 02/09/2022 13:01

It’s a lovely thing… as others have said, everyone loves to complain but not enough people thank
probably they were just caught
mots your anxiety
mom sure they appreciated it

Definitely overthinking OP, I love hearing things like this as a manager.

Would you find it cringey to be told you’re doing a good job?

Glad work are supportive and you’re feeling better Flowers

nothanksss · 02/09/2022 20:14

Oh thank goodness for that! I was really embarrassed, I just started talking without really realising what I was saying and then once I realised I wanted to just stop talking but I was already part way through my point

No not cringey - recognition is a good thing!

J0y · 03/09/2022 07:33

no I don't think that was cringey at all.

it acknowledges that you observed that they were supportive. they're not going to be annoyed that you NOTICED that!

People want their good work or their deeds (!) noticed.

Also, on a sub conscious level you cast them in the role of ''supportive types'' and now, so long as you don't capitalise on their previous support as though it were endless, they won't want to u-turn on that.

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 03/09/2022 07:53

They were probably surprised you were so pleased with how they'd helped. They probably feel for you and maybe feel bad they can't do more to help. It wasn't an awkward silence, just a stunned one! They wouldn't be helping you so much if they didn't want to
