Interviewers/Interviewees

Could someone help please?

I have an interview on Tuesday for a managerial role and I'm told the questions will be competency based.

Could an interviewer or recent interviewee advise what questions may be asked please?

Any help would be appreciated. I'm just trying to prepare for any question I could be asked.

Thanks!

Look at the job description and essential criteria and prepare examples using the STAR technique. That is the best framework to use to answer competency questions.

Give us an example of when you've had to deal with a
*difficult situation
*under performing employee
*failing project
*lack of resources

  • etc and describe how you overcame it.

Competency-based interviews are just the worst. They're all scenario based. "Give me an example of when XYZ happened, and tell me what you did to overcome it". Half the time, you just have to make something up because there's a good chance that a lot of scenarios that they pose to you, you would have never come across.

I don't think they're great for identifying the best candidate for a role so I'm always surprised when employers use them for higher level roles.

I second STAR. Write answers down and get as comfortable with them as possible.

Also be prepared for a question like, how do you start your day. What does your day look like? It’s suitably vague but enables you to put in a detailed answer excelling in how terribly organised yet flexible you are!

Thank you all so much for your replies. All so helpful and really appreciated.

@Username0308 I completely agree. I hate competency based interviews!
