Why does my boss think these things are a treat?

There's an annual conference for our education specialism. We'd said we weren't going this year, it's expensive, not particularly useful and hard to justify being away from school.

However head has decided now that SLT deserve a treat after the time we've had and we will all be going. Yes, it's 1.5 days away from school, but it's also a night away from home and a very late return home (because of the travel) on Friday night.

Forcesld fun in the evening, he'll "encourage" us all to drink more than I like to which we'll have to pay for ourselves on the first evening and then I'll have to sit through the conference, which isn't useful (by her own admission) and travel home with a hangover.

How is that a treat? I really don't mind being in school that much!

Are you paid extra for being away for the night?

Does not sound like a treat at all.
Can you suggest not going?
