Sacked for having wrong name

May I just state that our household is not interested in football & haven't watched the competition but we did see the European Cup Final on Sunday. DS was cheering on England.

My DS is Italian & I am English & our DC have Italian names.

My 17 year old DS has been working in a local company as a summer job before university. He has been told he is doing a great job.

Yesterday he arrived at work and started working. After a while his manager called him over & asked if his name was Italian. Moments later the manager told him that he wasn't needed anymore & he should 'just get out'. DS asked what was the reason was & told he was not good enough & too slow to learn.

DS left & called me totally confused. On his way home the senior manager called him & apologised & told to go back in today. He's gone in today.

AIBU to think this manager should not be in post?

Sorry had to attend some online training.

Yes it's a small company.
Yes it was a higher manager who called him.

I wasn't sure what rights he had as he hasn't got an actual contract as it classed as casual though he has given them his bank details & NI number.

He doesn't want to take it any further at the moment as it's his holiday job so just wants to earn some money for uni. It's convenient (walking distance) & he likes the people. Ironically he said last week how lovely everyone was & complementary about his work.

If he has any further trouble he will walk. I've not heard from him this morning so assume all ok.

I'll let you know what happened when he gets home.

This is terrible op. What did senior management say to him when they told him to go back in? Was the manager who sent him home still there?

wellstopdoingitthen · 13/07/2021 11:47

@HopeMumsnet

Hi there, Just to say thanks for the reports querying this thread, but we have no reason to believe that this poster is being anything other than truthful.
I find it really upsetting that people think I'm making it up. I wish I was.

He was already home so they said to come back today. They said that they had 'had words' with offending manager. The senior manager seems very professional so I hope that they ensure nothing similar happens to anyone else.

For the people querying the OP's story, you're a part of the problem. Xenophobia is a real issue, especially since Brexit.

I hope your son has had an apology this morning OP. We're all too quick to brush off these things as jokes or 'banter', but there's a thought process behind saying something offensive, and it's not a nice one at all.

Bells3032 · 13/07/2021 11:53

nationality is a protected characteristic (counted under race) and it is illegal to fire someone due to it (whether they are actually that nationality or just perceived). Take it to the ombudsman. They have opened themselves up to a massive lawsuit

Crepescular · 13/07/2021 12:05

@PRabbit

I would pursue this with a solicitor. Your son could be entitled to compensation and the company won’t dare behave like this again.
Don't be so ridiculous! Compensation for what?

I guess maybe pp are doubting that there are people out there stupid enough to do such an obviously unfair dismissal and open themselves up to the resulting legal issues. But I know there is no limit to human stupidity!

wjg65ka · 13/07/2021 12:25

Manager needs sacking instantly

Comefromaway · 13/07/2021 12:39

I work for a construction company.

I can absolutely 100% say that this sort of thing does happen in this industry so it’s very likely to in others too.

Some people must live in a bubble. I witness racism & xenophobia daily. (& always call it out). I’m only safe to do so because I’m the MD’s daughter. In other companies workers are not so lucky.

Mpsister · 13/07/2021 12:45

Really?

Geamhradh · 13/07/2021 12:52

Dreadful. Hope he is OK.
Was he just turned on the minute he arrived?

ClaireEclair · 13/07/2021 12:52

Are you sure the manager wasn't joking?

Fiddliestofsticks · 13/07/2021 12:59

If he wants to make money for uni then a compensation claim for discrimination will get him a bit extra!

SVRT19674 · 13/07/2021 13:01

@ClaireEclair hey love, you´ve just won yourself my very first Biscuit
Congratulations.

Horehound · 13/07/2021 13:03

Jeez that's terrible. What a crap way for your son to learn how horrible people can be.
I hope he goes to senior manager and ask what course of action they intend to take with the clearly racist middle manager

Tal45 · 13/07/2021 13:09

Horrible, horrible behaviour. Your poor son.

howdaft · 13/07/2021 13:14

Of course it happened. DH is Spanish, I'm English, I'v been told to 'f off back home' due to our surname.

Hope your DS is okay, disgraceful behaviour.

AlmostSummer21 · 13/07/2021 13:21

The OP isn't 'new' or a name hanger, there is no reason not to believe he, MN has commented, so if you don't believe it happened, just don't post & move on to another thread.

@wellstopdoingitthen. Poor DS, I hope today goes OK & preferably he gets an apology from the idiot that said that.

Reassure him it's the minority git that thinks like that & the majority do not agree with him - at all!!

AlmostSummer21 · 13/07/2021 13:22

Name changer! Bloody phone

userxx · 13/07/2021 13:39

Surely not.
