Reached my peak in media career, what next?

I've had a career in journalism/writing/editing in national media for 15 years and have reached a point where I can't progress any more, career or salary wise. I've been looking for a new job for about 2 years now, but every job offers the same or a lower salary (often with more responsibility or pressure than my current job too). I've come to the conclusion I'll be stuck on around £40k forever (which isn't bad but I'd really like to be able to rent my own place so I can focus on writing a book, which is difficult in a houseshare).

Any ideas for how to move on? Also open to total career change. I was considering law, but worried about competitiveness for roles - I can't afford to fork out for all the training and not get a job. I have a journalism degree. I don't want to work in PR or comms, just to note. Been there, done that, hated every second of it.
