Refuse 1 day of annual leave

Hi, I need your advice. My manager refused to give me 1 day of annual leave, didn't give me valid reason. I need the 1 day of as I won't have childcare for that day. What should I do?
I feel it is very unfair as I have no other option, and the 1 day of annual leave is the best option.

Any leave request can be declined. Do you have time to find an alternative?

Moonshine11 · 15/06/2021 15:06

Hard one as they can refuse, is anyone else off?
Have you told them why you need it?

HasaDigaEebowai · 15/06/2021 15:07

You have no legal right to it I'm afraid.

Cassandraprobs · 15/06/2021 15:08

You could take parental leave couldn't you?

Monika007 · 15/06/2021 15:14

I have no other option for childcare. I'll need it in 3 weeks time. My manager is not very suportive and she doesn't bother really. Paternal leave will be the option but I need to take as a 1 week, can't be days.

Tbh I’d be phoning in sick and I don’t care how it looks.

Finfintytint · 15/06/2021 15:16

Can you swap a day with a colleague?

Moonshine11 · 15/06/2021 15:18

Are you part time? Can you swap days with anyone?
Failing that I would ring in sick, there’s nothing you can do! You’ve gave enough notice.
I would ask why

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/06/2021 15:18

Surely a reason is given when its declined. Do you have a cap on how many people can be off on each day - would your leave exceed that?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/06/2021 15:19

Is the childs other parent around?

PineappleWilson · 15/06/2021 15:26

Parental leave is unpaid and has to be taken in weekly chunks, but any annual leave request cna be declined for business reasons e.g. will be v. busy that day, seasonal work demands, already full leave requests for that day. What else would you do for childcare, presuming your usual childcare has fallen through? If you just don't turn up, you won't be paid, and calling in "sick" may mean you're asked to provide a doctor's note to confirm sickness; we have to if off sick during strike action, for example, to confirm you are truly unwell. you can't just demand that they accept your A/L request.

Monika007 · 15/06/2021 15:36

Tried to swap but nobody can do it.

You can use a week of parental leave but only actually take one day.

DoYouRememberTheInnMiranda · 15/06/2021 15:40

What if you develop a temp and need a PCR that day? Nothing a Dr is going to want to get involved with for one day

GreyhoundG1rl · 15/06/2021 15:41

@Cassandraprobs

You could take parental leave couldn't you?
Doesn't this need prior approval also? If op can't be covered for annual leave on that day, I doubt she'll have any other type of leave signed off?
Moonshine11 · 15/06/2021 15:42

Have you asked her why? Don’t just sit on it ask the question and go from there

DirectionsForUse · 15/06/2021 15:47

There will be a reason though, unless you think she's said no just to be spiteful.

You asked for advice, talk to the person who knows and can do something about it. Does she know the position it's left you in?

PurpleSunrise · 15/06/2021 15:49

Well if no-one else can cover for you, isn’t that why it was declined?

Monika007 · 15/06/2021 15:50

She knows all. I think is the power issue at the moment with her. Will try to speak to her again. Policy says: if you need 1 day off book at least 1 week in advance.

You say she didn't give you "valid" reason. What reason did she give?

mumwon · 15/06/2021 15:56

do you have a HR?

DirectionsForUse · 15/06/2021 15:59

Unless you're going to drip feed that the children have complex SN it must be possible to arrange childcare with 3 weeks' notice.

I'd like to think an employer would do their best to accommodate this kind of request, but if they really can't, you need to make alternative arrangements

LIZS · 15/06/2021 16:00

What is your usual childcare?

CliftonGreenYork · 15/06/2021 16:10

As an HR Manager I would immediately flag this as suspicious considering they had applied for that very day off and it was refused? Also the manager sounds like a bit of a dick, so I would be wary.

Surely this means you can book 1 day off but you just need to give them ome weeks notice? You are giving them 3 weeks notice.
