Does this sound like a rubbish pay per hour?

DS went for an interview today for work at an after school club / holiday club.
The pay for 16 yr olds is £5 per hour and for 18 year olds it’s £6 per hour.

I was shocked. I paid our babysitter £5 per hour over 10 years ago.

The pay for the 18 year old is not in line with NMW.

ArosGartref · 08/06/2021 21:21

I'm assuming he's going to working under someone and not have sole responsibility for the children. On that basis, it sounds ok. Wages have stagnated over the past 10-15 years.

cupsofcoffee · 08/06/2021 21:22

For your DS it's fine but what they're paying 18yos is illegal.

Clymene · 08/06/2021 21:23

NMW is £6.56 for 18 year olds. I think for 16 year olds that's okay. It's more than NMW

shinynewapple21 · 08/06/2021 21:24

NMW for 16 year old is £4.62 ph and for 18 year olds is £6.56 ph. It's less for apprentices .

Shitfuckcommaetc · 08/06/2021 21:29

When I was 16 (16 years ago) I was earning £2.50ph....

ikeepseeingit · 08/06/2021 21:29

Yes the minimum wage is very low. It’s unfortunate that 18 year olds are expected to pay their way but not paid enough to live off if they need to.

Rupertpenrysmistress · 08/06/2021 21:31

Yes correct, HCA apprentice in my NHS trust on £6 something an hour as only 16. Shocking for what she does.

AlmostSummer21 · 08/06/2021 21:36

Given the NMW for adults, I think that's reasonable, but I think all bands need to be increased.

Happytodayhappytomorrow · 09/06/2021 09:57

Thank you for all your replies.

I don’t think I was overpaying our babysitter all those years ago so, as somebody has mentioned, I assume pay has just not increased.

Well to be fair, being a worker in a team led by a childcare professional is very different from having sole care as a babysitter. Fwiw I pay mine £8/hour

Of course Clymene Smile

I hadn't thought of that.
