I work on one of my days off?

In my new job I work 12 hour shifts, 3 days on and 3 days off. I do night shifts and day shifts alternating every fortnight.

If I worked, for example, Sunday 7pm-7am, Monday is counted as one of my day offs even though I was working midnight to 7am on Monday (so 7 hours out of my 12 hour shift).

Obviously it is what it is and I can't change the shift pattern, but is this normal that one of my days off actually has 7 hours of work?

Do you get paid by the hour? If so it doesn't matter?

I have never been in a job where I have worked nights so I don't know how it works but if you are working nights then one shift would always straddle two days so you'd have to be off from 7 am Monday and then have all of Monday off and all of Tuesday off and then next work at some point on Wednesday in order to have a full day off?

Yep, and you get it back the other way, when you work til 7am, and then get your 3 days off til the evening of the fourth day.
