Any HR people around that know about apprenticeships?

DS is a year into a 30 month Level 3 apprenticeship- but we've realised that the end date will cause a problem.

His apprenticeship will end in March 2021 but enrolment at Uni for the degree apprenticeships (assuming his employers will want to keep him on) will be September 2021, so he'll have 6 months gap.

It has been suggested that as his qualification will be completed by summer 2020, he could finish his apprenticeship before completing the End Point Assessment and enrol on to a degree apprenticeship - but I understand that this is bad form and seen as failing the apprenticeship, and there was something I heard about the employer being charged if he does this?

Could his employers start the degree apprenticeship in March 2021 but not enrol at Uni until September 2021?

Or will he have to hope that they offer him temporary work over the summer and then re-employ him as an apprentice in the autumn?

Any advice anyone ?

Thanks Smile

It's not clear where his employer is in all this. Is it them who has suggested starting the degree apprenticeship before finishing the first one? Does he definitely know his employer plan to offer him the degree apprenticeship after the current one? It would be odd for them to confirm that two years ahead.

Why not just carry on as planned, then as March 2021 approaches, have conversations with his employer about next steps, whether they wish to keep him on, whether they wish to go ahead with the degree apprenticeship, and, if so, whether they'll keep him on just on a 'normal' employed basis in the interim?

Thanks Flowery, no you're right, they've not confirmed anything, he's just a worrier!

If they're not going to offer a degree apprenticeship I think he'd quite like to go to Uni to do it as a full time student, so he wants to be prepared in case he needs to apply.

He's getting good feedback at work so I would hope they would keep him on one way or another!
