Office hours

Started new role hours are longer than I’d anticipated and the commute is over an hour ...autumn looming I’m having second thoughts. I think 8.30 to 5.30 is a tad long when you add in an hours plus travel either side...any thoughts? Thanks

I've noticed that standard hours used to be 9-5 and now it's more like 8.30 to 5 or 9 to 6.

Reading posts like these I realise now why I shunned office life at the expense of career progression in favour of field based roles.

Normal hours are 9 to 5, anything else is companies being CF, unless they offer flexibility.
I ask for flexibility and wfh before I even attend interviews, my first job in IT really spoiled me in that regard.

My current company’s official hours are 8.30 to 6. When I’m not wfh I go in a bit early and leave around 5-5.30 when I wrapped up my day. I don’t care about funny comments like ‘half day today, eh’. My reply is that I made enough money for the company today.

8.30 to 6 sounds like a horrendously long day to me 7worfs.

With a commute on top they basically own you Monday to Friday.

NeverSayFreelance · 29/08/2019 18:10

I interviewed for a job recently that was advertised as full time - turned out they expected 8-6 each day. The job required over an hour commute. I promptly rejected it.

It's shocking what some offices think is normal working hours.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 29/08/2019 18:18

That's basically a free 10 hours per week for them.. but some people will be desperate enough to do it.

7Worfs · 29/08/2019 18:41

Cloud, it’s also an industry in which overtime is expected (and completely unnecessary).
There are people who have their 3 main meals at work, which is just sad.

I do my own thing and focus on output, not presenteesm. Most of the time I get away with it, which goes to show they know it’s ridiculous.

ilovebrie8 · 29/08/2019 18:53

It’s bad nowadays the hours expected in private sector especially my place really wants 8 to 6! Official is 8.30 to 5.30 but comments made...I’m on lookout to move! Chancers...

I went field/home based around 7 years ago and never looked back. It's killed my career as I'm stuck on the same rung, but I don't have to sit in a chair for 9 hours a day ruled by the clock, and another chair an hour a day there and back to get there.

ilovebrie8 · 30/08/2019 19:47

Wise move clouds...I need to step off this hamster wheel...feel so fed up. I was told today that ideally they want people to work 7.30 to 5.30 eh Sad....that’s beyond the pale in my book.

What fucking time would you have to get up to be at your desk for 7.30? Seven loving thirty???

ilovebrie8 · 30/08/2019 22:18

5.30 anyone...beggars belief ...
