Feeling really despondent over job hunting

After missing out on promotion to a role I was already doing with excellent feedback, I had to step down to my former role. The new manager (an appointment from outside) made no attempt to hide her dislike for me and after a few months deleted my role and told me I would have to accept a demotion.

In the event I was made redundant and have been job hunting for a few months. I paid a company to re-vamp my cv and was pleased to have had two interviews in the past week. The first one I was sure I hadn't got, the interviewer made a disparaging comment to the effect that I was probably only the manager because I had been in the job the longest which was totally untrue. I explained that was not correct, but I took it to be a dig at my age and as I haven't heard anything more I presume I haven't got the job.

Yesterday's interview went well I thought, they seemed keen on me and asked when I could start and said they would be in touch 'very soon.' I haven't heard from them yet, but when I checked my profile on their application profile it says unsuccessful.

Am I being unreasonable to think I should have had an e mail? And will I ever get another job? I'm 61 (though I think I could pass for 10 years younger) and apart from the fact I can't get my pension for another five years, I want to work. I'm feeling very low at the moment.

The first interviewer sound rude and unprofessional, would you want to work there?

The second one should of course have sent you an email, but this seems to be the way these days, you only hear back if you're successful. Again imo rude and unprofessional but now the norm.

These days applying for jobs seems to be a numbers game, just keep applying and at some point you'll be the right candidate. Develop a very thick skin and try not to take the rejections to heart. Easier said than done.

Its tough out there and its got tougher in the past 10 years IME.

Very usual now to not even be contacted after interview if you are the unsuccessful one. And be dicked about up, down and sideways from both recruitment agencies and employers.

Any employer who talks to you like that at interview says way more about them than you. Making disparaging remarks at a candidate is very inappropriate but not atypical of misuse of power some people feel they have a right to abuse.

Head high, carry on looking. You have a wealth of experience to give, don't let unprofessional people detract from your value-add!

Agree with others, it's more about the companies than you. Try and keep positive, see these interviews as good practice. I always ask for feedback if unsuccessful, to help me with further applications. Could you temp? Sometimes new roles can come that way, or at least you are keeping your hand in. It can look good to employers that you are filling your time, getting experience. Have you registered with agencies?
