Eeek, email from boss and now I feel sick!

I'm being really pathetic because it wasn't even particuarly bad. A trifle brusque perhaps, but it's the fact that I have to be back at work no later than the 9th of July.

I've been off nearly a year and I've had so much other stuff to deal with that I've had my head in the sand about it. And now I have about 4 minutes to negotiate part time hours and find a childminder.

The email has reminded me how much I dislike working with my boss! He's sexist, racist, homophobic and exactly the sort of money minded person I like least in the world. I hate pandering to his stupid opinons and feeling like I'm 14 and waiting to see the headmaster. I'm hoping the anticipation is going to be worse than actually going in to see them all next week...

Can you find a new job?

somersetmum · 12/06/2007 23:14

You must have known you had to go back? Your employer is only obliged to hold your job open for one year and you must give four week's notice if you intend to leave. If your one year return date is 9th July then the last date you could have given notice was Monday. Therefore, your employer is now making the assumption that you intend to return on the same hours as you have passed the deadline to resign, hence his email. He is just following the law.

BB - leave, really., Life's too short to work for a wanker.

bohemianbint · 13/06/2007 11:05

I'd love to leave but it's the old money thing isn't it. Job pays really well and took me about 2 years to get a job in my chosen career.

What do you do? Do you enjoy your job?

bohemianbint · 13/06/2007 12:15

I'm a writer and it's fairly dry in a lot of ways but I've worked in much worse places. The main issue is my boss being unfair, unreasonable and just generally hard to be around, I feel like am on eggshells whenever he's in the office. I've asked to go back part time so hopefully that will be a good compromise, it'll bring in some money without me having to be there all the time.

Life is difficult enough working when you have young children without having to deal with idiots like this. I would look for another job sharpish.
