Interview tips- how do I convince them that I'm perfect for the job?!

Hi all. Job interview coming up on Tues and I'm getting nervous... I haven't had a formal interview for a good while. Have done the obvious- haircut and new good luck interview clothes purchased with a view to down-playing my scruffy side, etc. Any tips on what and what not to say/do and how to present myself? What do people look for when they?re interviewing? Is it true that the panel decide for or against in the first 12 seconds of the interview and, if so, how an earth does one create a good impression in such a short time?! I'm fairly keen, not to say desperate, to move on from my current job soon and being short listed for this post- which sounds great!- has given me a bit more confidence that it CAN be done. I?d really like to feel that I?d given the interview my best shot and that, even if I don?t get the job, I have something to build on for future occasions. Help!
(Btw- I work in the voluntary sector with kids and families in case anyone has insider knowledge or advice!)

Lots of luck Scummy - sure you'll wow 'em!

Willow2 · 22/07/2002 19:50

Hi SM - how did it go? Well I hope xx

ScummyMummy · 22/07/2002 22:08

Thank you SOOOOOO much everyone. You've really influenced my preparation for this and I feel much more confident that I'll be ready for some of the stuff they might ask. Here's hoping anyway! If I fluff my lines it won't be down to you guys, that is for sure.
I'll let you know the worst tomorrow. Early night tonight, I think. I'm taking my printed copy of this thread for my night time reading though. These really are the toppest tips I've ever come across and I'm very touched by all the messages of good luck. Thank you thank you thank you.

Good luck Scummymummy, you could always recite a poem

Re my lst posting. Duh! There I go conforming to mad SAHM stereotype - "she doesn't even know what day it is". For some reason I was convinced that yesterday was Tuesday. Maybe I should get out more. Anyway, hope today goes/went well!

ScummyMummy · 23/07/2002 14:55

Well.... it went ok I think. Not brilliant- a few glaring omissions, why oh why do all the things you COULD have said come rushing into your mind as soon as you exit the door?- but not a complete disaster either. I was more prepared than I might have been thanks to you guys! I think a lot will depend on the calibre of the other candidates really- just have to hope an all-round superstar with great interview skills wasn't on the short list because I think I was probably at the "just about appointable" level. Good news is I think I can do better at this interviewing malarkey and was pleased with this as a start, so if I don't get it I definitely have someting to build on for next time. So thanks again and I will definitely keep this thread for ever more- I think it's a work of art and incredibly useful! Thanks again.
