Can you work at the gp surgery you are registered with

There’s a receptionist job at my gp surgery that I was going to apply for but wondered if there are rules against working at the practice you are registered with? My children and extended family are also registered with the practice. Does anybody know if it would be allowed?
Thank you

At my surgery, yes, you would be allowed to. You just can't access the records of any family members.

I did for five years. And had full access to all of the clinical records system, apart from the GPs themselves.

Technically yes, but where I work you are ‘encouraged’ to register at another practice. And you 100% aren’t allowed to access family members records.

When i worked at gp surgery we haf to be registered elsewhere but was a town surgery. Any relatives records were blocked to anyone othercthan clinicians and senior staff

Thank you for all your replies! If you’re encouraged to register with another surgery, do they also encourage your family to register elsewhere or does the fact that you can’t have access to their records mean they’d be ok to stay?

It would make sense if it was just you. One person, not a whole extended family. Of the Doctors surgeries I know, they are all staffed by local people. Doctors, receptionists etc. I would apply and see what the rules are. It will not stop you being considered if you are the best person for the job.

Yes. My mum works at the surgery where she (and I) are registered. She can’t access my notes (or her own without asking someone to unlock them).

We don't let employees remain patients. I don't think it's a good idea. We just think there's a conflict of interest. Ok for minor things but not great if it's something more complex.
Obviously some places you can't avoid this.

Yeah family members can stay registered but you aren’t allowed to access records - so you can book appts, request prescriptions etc for them, you just have to ask someone else to do.

MollyPutTheKettle0n · 18/06/2018 19:34

How would they know who your relatives are?

MadisonMontgomery · 18/06/2018 20:21

I don’t think we are physically blocked from relatives records - it is just a big no-no. I haven’t ever known anyone get checked up on though.
