Maternity cover running a small team - what not to do?

Next week I'm starting a new job - a year of maternity cover, managing a team of four.

I do have some ideas for how to approach it, but would be interested in your thoughts on what has/would annoy you about new managers and stuff you'd like them to have done but they didn't. Just to avoid any obvious and not-so-obvious pitfalls! The maternity cover thing is new for me and adds another level to it all.

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, I couldn't see an appropriate category

Just be sincere - take time to learn about your employees, how things work and ways of working

Eg do they have regular meetings, what do they find useful etc :)

Thanks. I've only been on the other side of it before having hired someone to cover my own leave.
