Do I go to HR or my boss?

I want to resign.
My boss is rarely in the office so do I phone him/e mail him or go and actually see HR, who are just along the corridor?
I’d like to speak to my boss but I’m wondering what is the protocol.

I'd email and ask to speak with him today. If he can't call you then do it over email. It will be his responsibility to let HR know but you could pop your head in in a few days to ask if they need anything from you (and to confirm he's told them Smile)

I wouldn't worry about protocol, there isn't really one in these situations. People do different things according to circumstances. I'd e-mail your boss and pop a letter into HR.

Email your boss and copy in HR. Perhaps then ask HR if they want a letter too. Resigning by email is accepted in my workplace but it might not be the case everywhere.
