DH work issued new contract with “variable working hours as dictated by company”

DH job previously had specific working hours with an “overtime as required” clause. Leading up to Christmas they wanted him to start a few hours earlier than usual and cited that this fell under the “reasonable overtime”. He was as flexible as he could be and my work at the time meant that it was not much of a problem.

I have now started a new job with a finish time of 4pm. DH usually starts at 7pm but last night he was handed a new contract that removed his hours and now states “working hours as set by management” currently they are requesting him in work at 5pm but this could be as early as 2pm at busy times. Many people have said they are leaving as like us they have a partner who works during the day and children to care for.

Do we really have no choice but to accept this contract?

How long has he worked there? Have they given him any notice of the change?

He has the right to refuse a change to his terms and conditions but there are ways his employer can force it through if they need to for business reasons. It’s a lot easier for them to force it if he’s been there less than two years.
