Bored of office work...working as a train manager / conductor?

I’ve been working in offices for a few years, first as a personal assistant, then office management and more recently project management/scheduling. Before that, I was airline cabin crew.

I’m really bored of offices! I work in the public sector so my pay is okay, not brilliant at my level. I have flexible working and in theory career progression.

Great Western Railway are advertising for conductors and train managers and Cross Country for train managers.

Does anybody have experience of this type of work? The pay seems good as does the pension and benefits.

The thing that would put me off that is that when things go wrong, they go very wrong and you are then stuck in a confined space with a great deal of very unhappy people. If you are able to handle that than go for it!

Go for it! You could turn down the offer if you were to get one, but realise you regret having applied, should it come to that (not likely).

Not as confined as in "airline cabin crew", I guess...

I do admire a bit of adventurous career development Smile

The train manager role could be very interesting even though very different to the other roles you've done but you have plenty of transferable skills.

Well I’ve applied for 3 jobs today so fingers crossed!
