Job hunting support thread

user1487175389 · 25/02/2017 11:16

Hi, just wondered if anyone fancied joining me for a job hunting support thread?

I'm having trouble motivating myself to even apply for jobs, mainly because I talk myself out of applying, or get halfway through an application before abandoning it, thinking 'why would anyone any to hire me?'
.
Anyway, the fact is, I'm brassic, and i'm bored at home. Despite being run off my feet with the Dcs most of the time. I'm sick of not being able to plan holidays, having to budget til I want to cry, and feeling like life is passing me by. There muse be a job out there I could do. I have experience. I'm generally a helpful, hard working and cooperative and intelligent individual, or so I have to keep reminding myself. It's not actually that long ago that I was working, but I've since lost a lot of confidence.

Could really use a (gentle,) kick up the arse, and would be happy to do the same for anyone else who needs it. Thought we could challenge ourselves - set our own minimum targets for completed job applications, recommend useful self help books, maybe give each other tips on interview prep and outfits. That sort of thing. And of course console each other if it goes tits up.

Right. So my target to day is just to get one application submitted and not get sidetracked and paranoid that my referees don't really like me, or obsess over my last unsuccessful interview. Anyone else?

elsie07 · 01/03/2017 17:58

Well done Nigel although I feel your pain on the over-qualified thing. I didn't get a previous post because they thought I'd be bored and I really wanted the job.

Did you like the company? Is it somewhere you wanted to work? It's great that you have another interview lined up though. I wish I had other options too.

Yes and good luck to you also gossipgirl.

nigelforgotthepassword · 01/03/2017 18:50

I did like them and it would be a handy commute. But I just don't know if I want the stress of the more senior role.Too late now anyway I guess so I'll wait to hear from them and how I go on at the other place tomorrow.

nigelforgotthepassword · 02/03/2017 14:42

Eeek! I've been offered the job from the interview this morning!!

Can I join you all? Had an interview yesterday, supposed to find out today or tomorrow (hoping it's today as I'm so anxious I'm shaking), I desperately want this job. I have another interview on Saturday, and another the Saturday after :)

nigelforgotthepassword · 02/03/2017 15:28

Thankyou Smile best of luck everyone else.
Now off to break the news to the DD's that they are going to Shen go man knows the child minder after school 3 days a week.it will go down like a lead balloon Confused. There's always a flip side Grin

elsie07 · 02/03/2017 19:21

Well done Nigel, that's brilliant. Unfortunately I didn't get the job I interviewed for which I'm obviously really disappointed about. I'm hoping to get into some temporary admin work at the uni so I'll plough on. It's so bloody exhausting though. Need to just keep applying . And good luck Ovaries, let us know how you get on.

Well done Nigel that is good news, what will you be doing in your new role?

Sorry to hear you weren't successful this time Elsie. As you say, it is all damn exhausting, not to mention the effect on your self esteem.

User if it is TA work you are looking are, then there is ALWAYS a question on Safeguarding and behaviour management. You may also be asked to plan a short activity with a group of children as part of the process. Scenario questions seem to come up at interview too, 'what would you do in xyz situations'. Best of luck.

I am in the middle of applying for a job at the local agricultural college, just got to the supporting statement, after about 20 pages! God I hate application forms. I'm in two minds whether to just focus on CAB for now and see where that takes me, rather than sweat over these job applications. Trouble is, I want my own money again and it's been two months now, not good :-(

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 03/03/2017 10:25

Sorry you didn't get the job elsie

Well done nigel :)

Still not heard anything. I don't feel positive at all.

gossipgirlxo · 03/03/2017 12:09

I've also yet to hear from my job interview :( starting to look so unlikely!

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 03/03/2017 14:15

Don't lose hope gossip Flowers

I was feeling really pessimistic but I've had a call to say I've got the job!

Now we need to move across the country Shock

nigelforgotthepassword · 03/03/2017 15:07

Sorry Elsie.
And well done ovaries.

I will be managing a mental health outreach service Smile

gossipgirlxo · 03/03/2017 15:25

Unfortunately I didn't get the role offered but they have offered me a different role, however it is less money and not the role I am looking for!

user1487175389 · 06/03/2017 15:26

Arf. Received an email this morning inviting me to interview tomorrow. Apparently my email got sent to the wrong address. I think I'd give myself some form of breakdown trying to get prepared in 24 hours. Interview prep. Observation prep. Tracking down resources. Childcare arrangements. - it's just too much to process. Am tempted to send an email thanking them but declining. It's not something I can reschedule because they see everyone at once.

Nigel I wonder if you may be able to help me. Am currently trying to change career. Former teacher but been out for 10 years now. Have done a few other things since but am interested in the field of mental health. However, I have zero experience. Would like to become a support worker or something similar. Any ideas where to begin?

Nasreen · 09/03/2017 15:27

How did the interview go user?

user1487175389 · 10/03/2017 09:14

It didn't. Sad I just couldn't find the childcare at such late notice. Feel the odds are stacked against me, any way I turn. 24 hrs flipping notice though. AIBU to think I didn't stand a chance?

OP posts:
Nasreen · 10/03/2017 16:32

Oh no, what a shame :( What was the job for? How old are your little ones? Would it be better to wait until they are at school do you think?

For my last interview, I was given 24 hours notice and I panicked like mad!

Best of luck for next time, am sure something will come your way.

elsie07 · 15/03/2017 20:04

Nasreen. I'm currently a mental health support worker (well until tomorrow) so may be able to help. If you want to work in the field unqualified you need to look for jobs with third sector organisations. It's possible to go in without direct experience sometimes if you can show you have lived experience or close family experience. I've also worked in statutory mental health services as an OT tech, that was interesting and something your teaching experience would help with. You could also look at child and adolescent mental health services. You wouldn't be paid much unqualified but it would be a way to see if you enjoyed the work.

Nasreen · 15/03/2017 20:32

Thanks Elsie, that's really helpful, thanks. Most of the jobs I have seen require some level of experience, but I still want to give it a go. Do you work in the community?

I'm torn between advice and guidance type jobs and MH. CAB is giving me lots of really valuable experience, but I need a paid job too.

Newmother8668 · 15/03/2017 22:23

I'll join you! Gave my notice to current job and applied for 78 jobs in the last 24 hours. It will be difficult as I'm looking for three days a week, near home and a decent upper salary. The web is my friend.
