classroom assistants

There is a classroom assistants job advertised in a primary school near to me and I'm thinking of applying for it.

Do classroom assistants work in all classrooms through out the school i.e from primary 1 up to primary 7? or do they just tend to work with the little ones i.e primaries 1-3?

Just curious as I don't know anyone who is a classroom assistant and I don't remember there being any when I was at school, but then that was a long time ago.

I work all INSETs if its not my day to work I get paid O/T.Our O/T is paid at time and 1/3 and we get paid all holidays so we do better than the teachers that way!

I work with 16-19 year olds(and supply for ages 2-19) in a SN school.Offically anyone who has been there over 5 years is a Senior TA (although some people jumped up early when we were reevaluated a few years ago)

We get paid the basic hourly rate for 'extra hours' - just wondered what the 'norm' was !

I work all inset days (except twi-light ones) as that is part of my pay. If I do any extra hours during the holidays like sats booster classes, I get time and a half.

We have classroom assistants in all year groups. I work in reception atm, but was previously in yr2. They do like to move you around a bit IME, although I've never ventured further than yr3!

As for development days - it really depends if what they are doing is relevent to you, so sometimes we attend & other times we get the day off!

Have been thinking tonight after this one and the INSET thread, when we do the twilight sessions (and some are pretty much neccesary) we don't get paid yet if I do a INSET day I get paid o/t

pinkchampagne · 27/02/2007 20:26

You should get paid for twilight sessions - we do.

Although, must say, we don't tend to do too many twilights.

I have done one and I got time off in lieu.

We have a lot that are optional, local area ones and then school ones usually 2 nights (in a row for 3 h each) every year to redo restraint training so need it.Think its a cost thing with 45 TAs all at 1 1/3 time it would be very expensive. We get paid all year so we have it good anyway. How do you get time in Lieu?Does someone then not have to cover you?

pinkbubble · 27/02/2007 21:13

I work in reception, and its run as a unit,(2 classes together most of the time)When we had time off in lieu it was up to the other TA to take on the other responsibilities! Sounds harsh but it did work
