Change in job title. Should I be worried?

We were asked to vote for which new job title we would like as our current 1 doesn't really cover our role any longer (think secretary to project manager)

They have said there will be no amendment to our contracts, no salary increase and no change to our job description.

I can't help but wonder if this is ok? It's a large company and the job title change is for approx 40 people.

mine has changed a few times, I have never thought to worry about it. The job description has always stayed the same so its the same job.

I've had a new name badge each time though.

I wouldn't worry too much. My job title changes every few months and never gives any clue to what my job is. I think it helps keep someone employed?

If the job title you have doesn't reflect the role accurately surely the only reason changing it wouldn't be 'ok' is if it were changed to something even less accurate?

If your employer was imposing a more junior job title on you or something, that would be different, but if you are getting to choose the one the majority of you feel most comfortable with that sounds like a good way of addressing the problem.

The new title has manager in it but there is no new salary and enhanced benefits attached to the Manager title. That said, as long as there is no reason to worry about the reasons behind it I'm happy to be called what ever the majority voted on.

Yes, I feel the current title suited what I do on a day to day basis but we had to vote on a new one and the current one wasn't an option.

Sounds fine. No need for a salary increase unless they intend to give you additional responsibilities. Manager in your job title is generally good for your career.

Our job titles are pretty much meaningless to anyone outside the company and tell you almost nothing about what a particular role is about to people within the company, so I don't worry too much about titles - grade and pay scale are more important.

If your job title has manager in it now but your role hasn't actually changed then I'd be highlighting that in bold in my CV and milking it for all it's worth!
