Could USAUKmum tell us where/how to get on one of these Indexing courses?

How do you know which proof-reading/editing training courses are legit, and which are scams. How does one start up a client base?

I have a really bad impression of self-employed or free-lance, because (except for the trades) it seems really stressful, unreliable, not flexible at all. I've known people who cancelled holidays because work came in at the last minute and they dare not pass it up (not knowing when work would next be offered or dare not get a reputation as unavailable).

DH's boss has his own company. He + his family get great holidays. But I know he often can't sleep at night, worrying about it all, too.

Sorry -- went shopping yesterday in Manchester (taking my in-laws up on their offer of babysitting )

The website is The Society of Indexers

The course is in 4 sections. The first section costs £60 for non society members. So reasonable to see if you'd like it. They have a questionaire to see if you are cut out for the job. Found here Is Indexing for you

You do the course at home on your computer. The tests (after each unit) are taken at home. The first test you get 21 days, the subsequent tests are 28 days.
