What is it really like working in a care home?

I have been trying to find a job in a care home - one for old people as I have always liked caring for others and have many years experience in my personal life.

There is another care home though that is advertising a role but that is working with adults 18 to 40 who have issues / conditions that mean they can't live alone. I hadn't really thought about that line of work but it does seem interesting.

Also I have never worked shifts (always 9 to 5 sort of hours) so are they hard to get used to and how do they fit around family life?

Any advice / information welcome really!
