Marketing question - unsolicited email/cold calling and the law

Hi,

Am looking for my first client (I'm a VA/Virtual Project Manager) and have bought some data from a third party (marketing file). 'About to compose my first emails to send to the unsuspecting businesses and suddenly it occurred to me that I could be prosecuted.

Some google research was reasonably clear cut on phone marketing; screen against TPS list - although I've no idea where to obtain this - but email marketing law suggests businesses must have previously opted in to receiving email. Obviously they've not opted in to me as this is a completely new cold sell.

Does everyone check against these lists, both email and phone and, if so, where do you get the information?

Thanks v much,
