Are there any temps out there who could give me an idea of the hourly rate for temporary secretarial work for someone with shorthand? Also what computer packages are expected these days? TIA.

I don't have shorthand so don't know if that increases your rate significantly but otherwise it depends on things like where you live and what sector you work in i.e. public sector/charity often lower than corporate.

I temp in zone 4 London at a charity but get a generous £14 per hour (probably because I don't go through an agency but am on a zero hours contract). However, if/when I have to revert to an agency, for central London I would expect at least £12 per hour, nearer £14 (but then I wouldn't want to work in the city etc where you can get £16 at least) but wouldn't be surprised to be offered c. £10/£11 (you can't also be fussy if you want to get on the right side of an agency/pay the mortgage!).

Microsoft office is still the one to know for most jobs. Again, depends on the job but it's always good to be very familiar with Word, Excel and Powerpoint - and Outlook. Salesforce and Raiser's Edge would probably give you access to more jobs that less people are competing for, as would any DTP knowledge.

Bit of advertising there by any chance, Uma? Wink
