I'm at a bit of a career crossroads and this is an option- what are the pros, cons or potential pitfalls of doing this? (Job security aside)
Been doing plenty of googling but would love to hear from someone with practical experience...

I do but started out as a freelance self employed. I think sole trader is easier when you're starting out and ltd company when turnover hits a certain level. However if you're sure of earning £40k + from the outset then ltd company would be worth it.

I'm working through an umbrella company at the moment so i pay tax as PAYE but I'm considering setting up as Ltd.

I'm no expert but I don't think you can trade as a sole trader any longer. It needs to be through an umbrella company or Ltd.

That's what I thought too Linus, looks like it's either paye or an umbrella company...I would do it all via an accountant to avoid messing it up myself

You can set up as a sole trader www.gov.uk/set-up-sole-trader, otherwise if there has been any change in that, my accountant hasn't told me!

You can definitely still be a sole trader, I am one.

PeppermintInfusion · 20/06/2014 17:09

Thanks Jaded, think my line of work prefer to deal with you as a ltd company.
As long as there aren't any major issues aside from paperwork I wouldn't mind doing it.

There are also major financial benefits to being a ltd company too - I wish I had done it years ago. Mind you I'm behind on my admin and aware I can't avoid it any longer...

Hoppinggreen · 20/06/2014 20:35

I do. According to my accountant being a ltd company gives people more confidence in dealing with you.

Yes, I do.
