Returning to work after being a SAHM - who did you use as references?

I am starting to apply for jobs after several years as a SAHM. Who to use as references? Should I find a willing ex colleague from years ago, or try to think of someone more recent (eg someone who has worked with me in a voluntary role)? What did you do?

Both would be a good idea. Having employed people myself, a candidate offering both would impress me most.

I will have to start thinking about returning to work next year, but have started to prepare already. I am still in contact with my most recent boss, so that is one (I have confirmed that she is happy to do this) and also I have been on a few free courses, so have asked the tutor if it is ok to use her as my second reference
