You lot are always far better at this than I am.

When I was a doula I was called Harmony doula, mainly due to the prmotion of harmony during childbirth and beyond, my logo was a ting yang type sign but with the pregnant bump

domestickler · 21/08/2006 18:05

Ohhh sounds good

I forgot to say, I will mainly be doing postnatal work. Especially at first.

So I wouldnt rule out anything to do with birth side of it as that is obviously what it is all about but need to get across the postnatal bit.

I only did postnatal work, where abouts are you, and what course have you done?

domestickler · 21/08/2006 18:07

Im in Newcastle upon Tyne.

I did the Nurturing Birth course and about to do breastfeeding counselling.

You?

How about "Tranquil Mums"? Sounds a fantastic idea by the way - would have loved to have had someone like you around particularly after ds2

Quadrophenia · 21/08/2006 18:12

Nurturing Birth wasn't going then I've heard good things about it, i did one with Ruth Tamir, its a lovely job I wish you all the best, are you a member of DUK?

domestickler · 21/08/2006 18:17

Just going through the membership of DUK (IE finally getting round to sending the form off ;))

Why did you stop?

Did you enjoy it?

Tranquil is a good one

What about

Precious Cargo or something like that

or is it crap!!??

OP posts:
Quadrophenia · 21/08/2006 18:23

Lack of work to be honest despite huge amounts of promotion, I was featured in local papers, magazines, wrote to every HV in the county, did presentations at Local shows, affiliated myself with nanny agencies etc. It was hard to keep going at it to get little back, plus the last job I did I was treated like poo (long story) and i just decided enough was enough. I think its a fantastic role though and do wish I'd stuck at it, Precious cargo is ok but refers more to carrying ie pregnancy and as Pn doula wouldn't be relevant??. I really do wish you lots of luck with it all it really is a fab job x

SewingMadMummy · 21/08/2006 18:26

doulally????

SewingMadMummy · 21/08/2006 18:26

sorry....

Alibaldi · 21/08/2006 18:28

Serenity

domestickler · 21/08/2006 18:35

I really like Doulally and also Dou La La

But probably not appropriate!

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 21/08/2006 18:36

Personally, I wouldn't go for anything airy fairy or new agey. It could put people off.

There was a doula near me called Jan Heffer and she traded as Hefferlumps IIRC

SoupDragon · 21/08/2006 18:37

I like Dou La La !

domestickler · 21/08/2006 18:38

Soupdragon - I do agree with you actually.

Something I would like to do actually is move the idea away from being airy fairy. I think at the moment that side of it could put off lots of people who could benefit one because they percieve it to be a hippy thing.

So......anyone else. What do you think of Dou la la?

OP posts:
Quadrophenia · 21/08/2006 18:43

I think Dou La la is great
but one thing i will also say is that it may be a good idead to have something in the name which gives an idea of what you do. Down south people know more about doulas and what they do, away from the south east corner you still get alot of 'whats a doula?' comments. From the purpose of advertising it may be a good idea to have an indicator in the name like 'helping hands doula services'

Carmenere · 21/08/2006 18:45

Dou La La would not inspire confidence in me sorry.

domestickler · 21/08/2006 18:47

Carmenere - SPOILSPORT (but probably right )

Ok

What about

Helping Hands

OP posts:
Alibaldi · 21/08/2006 18:48

Caring/Caressing Hands dou la la makes me think dippy sorry. Needs to be a warm name imo.

SoupDragon · 21/08/2006 18:48

Helping Hands could work - logo of hands holding a mother & baby?

domestickler · 21/08/2006 18:52

Caressing Hands?

They may think its a kinky massage parlour

OP posts:
Carmenere · 21/08/2006 18:53

I think Helping Hands is good.

Alibaldi · 21/08/2006 19:39

oops never thought of that. Just trying to find cuddly kind of words.

domestickler · 21/08/2006 19:42

Alibaldi :D

I've found another doula using Helping Hands

Do I have to steer clear?

OP posts:
treacletart · 21/08/2006 19:49

Dont want to sound like a killjoy but if your worried about being taken seriously how about just using your own name? I reckon "Jane Brown - Doula" would inspire more confidence than some hippy sounding adjective. If your teaming up with any other doulas then I guess it does make more sense to go with an umbrella name though - or how about your local are eg Anytown Doulas. It would certainly help generate traffic to your website.
