Please help me find a job for dh in Yorkshire (IT)

Dh has been out of work for 8 months and we have not got anywhere near enough money to pay the bills, let alone live on. I work 3.5 days and can't increase my hours yet.

Does anyone know of a job in or near Yorkshire, preferably in IT? He has worked in IT for about 20 years, specialising in servers, but also general desktop support, working in 3rd line support. However, he will take ANYTHING if it will help pay the bills.

We are currently trying to sell our house to release some equity to live off.

Thank you for reading Smile

MN should this be in Employment Issues instead? If so, feel free to move Smile

Can you be more specific with the area it will help? Smile

Is contracting an option?

kazzawazzawoo · 25/02/2014 22:24

Of course.

We live in North Yorkshire, near Selby, which is between York and Leeds. York, Leeds, Sheffield, Doncaster etc all easily within reach. He will travel further if fuel costs won't eat up all his earnings!

Thanks for reading Smile

We have two of the major GP IT system suppliers based in Leeds - TPP and EMIS. I know EMIS are recruiting at the moment, don't know if they are looking for developers.

Has he not just looked on Jobserve to see what's currently being advertised?

kazzawazzawoo · 25/02/2014 22:25

Yes, contracting is an option. In fact he has been contracting for the past nine years, following repeated redundancies Hmm Anything would be good right now Smile

Is he using nhs jobs, local universities, sector1

VivaLeBeaver · 25/02/2014 22:25

Has he looked on the nhs jobs website? Hospitals have big it depts and I believe only advertise on the nhs website so he may miss such ads.

kazzawazzawoo · 25/02/2014 22:26

He applies every day for lots and lots of jobs, but just isn't getting a look in.

That was grin at the xpost, not about him not getting a job.

kazzawazzawoo · 25/02/2014 22:26

Not sure if he's looked on the NHS website, thanks, I will let him know.

VivaLeBeaver · 25/02/2014 22:27

Is he not getting interviews or is he not getting jobs after having an interview?

MrsKranky · 25/02/2014 22:28

Kazza, if you PM me I can send you the details of the agency I have always worked with for IT staff?i am based in Yorkshire and work in HR, they have always done an excellent job, and do perm, temp & contracting. Just let me know!

ShatnersBassoon · 25/02/2014 22:28

So he's registered with all agencies and nothing is coming up? Has he been getting interviews, or is it a case of no jobs in his field available?

Is there any training/certification that would broaden his horizons?

kazzawazzawoo · 25/02/2014 22:28

Thanks Smile That's great. Do you have a link?

He has had four interviews. Each time he is pipped to the post. Never negative feedback. Other applicants seem to have been younger - dh is 43. He is not asking for high wages, in fact will take anything tbh.

He is registered with all the main agencies he has come across including Jobserve and the job centre one, Reed etc etc. As I said, he really is applying for the jobs, but often doesn't even hear back from the agency, despite it being a job he could do in his sleep.

We are struggling to survive on £1000 per month, so really cannot afford training - borrowing money for it not an option, too much debt and poor relatives Wink

He has had cv help from the job centre too btw.

kazza I work in IT too and had a call a couple of days ago about a contract in Leeds. I have worked there before (same company) but don't want to go back as I lived away from home and don't want to do that again. I will pm you the agency details etc and it may be worth your DH calling them to see if the role is still available. Even if it has gone I know they recruit a lot there so is worth him registering.

claretandamberforever · 25/02/2014 22:37

west yorkshire police have IT jobs online right now but not cracking pay. more 1st line support. application form horrendous.

AlpacaYourThings · 25/02/2014 22:39

Is he on LinkedIn?

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone · 25/02/2014 22:41

Do you look at jobs.ac.uk, for technical IT roles in universities within your travel distance?

York, Sheffield, Bradford, Leeds, Huddersfield and many many colleges.

Good luck OP.

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone · 25/02/2014 22:42

Call university HR departments direct and ask about temp cover roles - worth a shot.

Northernlurker · 25/02/2014 22:44

Dh works in IT. He suggests contacting this company as it sounds like your dh's skill set fits with their business here. He says most of the agencies are on jobserve anyway but he could try experis too.
