Ex-engineer - what can I do next?

I have experience of working in manufacturing (quality/ product dev) and also have a PhD (so have experience in research and writing papers/ thesis etc).

I have 3 years before my youngest DD starts school and I'd like to make a plan - don't mind retraining at all or starting a business.

Any clever ideas?

Thanks

Thanks Ilanthe, that's really useful and interesting. I can see how his Physics PhD is useful in the nuclear industry - and what a place for H&S, definitely need it there!

Dh works with a woman who works school hours term time only to fit her work round her dc. Dh also works 4 days.

Their boss is sympathetic to their needs as long as they do the work because they are both excellent engineers and he wants to keep them both. This is process engineering in the oil & gas sector.

Thanks badroly, sounds like a good employer!

He is although dh and his colleague are both contractors. I was knackered last night but was trying to reiterate what someone said up thread about the value placed on good experienced engineers at the moment if you decided to stick with what you know.

Fwiw I have an engineering degree, worked in engineering (admin) then went into teaching (PGCE) then went back into a training/admin role in an engineering company.

I'm now studying accountancy after many years as a sahm...

Good luck with the accountancy bad roly! How are you finding it? What course are you doing?
